Way to win the 1999 Prep League tournament, and the 1999 States, Cougars!
As we said last year, it's mainly just a matter of who REALLY wants a more impressive extracurricular achievement on their college application: a Cougar or a Tiger. Collegiate has consistently demonstrated that the right combination of hard work, teamwork, experience, leadership and even a little luck can really pay off.

In 1999 Collegiate added to its list of Prep. School All-Americans!
If
wrestling´s becoming increasingly popular as a high school sport, what
is happening to the OFFICIAL college teams that used to give so many
scholarships? Answer:
Title IX
Fortunately hope remains with both the
NCAA and especially
the National Collegiate Wrestling
Association (a new college club
league).*There are several off-season open
tournaments in the Virginia / D.C. area. For more information, click
here.
For the latest public school rankings in Virginia, please click

Virginia´s Wrestling Roundup). In 1999, Collegiate was ranked
#2 in all of Central Virginia! (Lee-Davis was #1). Meanwhile,
Atlee went on to place among the top three schools in the state at the AAA
level! For Virginia tournament archives, please click

tourney will be on the same weekend this year, so we will have to miss the
more competitive showdown this February. We've got an exciting &
challenging season ahead nevertheless.

*Several Cougars
are ranked in the
Prep Page's
Virginia '97-'98 rankings.
*Five of our Cougar wrestlers went to George Mason's team camp this
summer, and they all got in 20+ matches--that's a good half a season extra
which hopefully will help them out this winter.
*The Collegiate Mat Club has frequently met on Wednesday nights at Collegiate.
Even just a little occasional practice during the off-season can make
a huge difference once tournament time rolls around. Sufficiently
fine-tuned, award winning skills require maintenance. If you don't
use them, you lose them. Douglas Freeman, Hermitage,
Grundy and several other schools
in the Virginia area have relatively strong attendance at their own post-season
programs, and it tends to show between November and February of each year.
Champions usually aren't born, they're made. Just about the
only place where success comes before work is inside a dictionary.
*There are several off-season open tournaments in the Virginia / D.C.
area. For more information, please click
here.
*"Half a season worth of matches in June" ....about 8 or 9 Cougar wrestlers
got involved with team camp at perennial wrestling powerhouse George Mason
University, June 22-26. Participants wrestled 3-5 matches per day
there, and also received lots of instruction.
Summer wrestling makes winter champs. Tigers and Saints: we'll
see you this winter.
